Benefits of Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy

Since LDR Brachytherapy allows physicians to safely prescribe the dose of radiation specifically to the area of interest there are numerous benefits, including:

  • Eliminates prolonged hospitalization as an outpatient procedure or possible overnight stay.
  • Greater patient comfort during and after procedure.
  • Radiation seeds are placed in approximately one hour with no further treatment needed if a low risk patient.
  • No systemic side effects associated with the treatment: i.e. nausea, hair loss, or diarrhea.
  • Minimal recovery time. The patient can safely go home and return to normal activities after the procedure.
  • No repeat trips necessary.
  • No cumbersome or painful tubes left in the breast.
  • Slow delivery of very low energy radiation over 3 – 4 months allows better and continuous cancer "kill" while allowing normal tissue in the area of the tumor to repair itself simultaneously.
  • Most experience with this form of radiation delivery, first used over 100 years ago.
  • Least expensive form of radiation management for breast cancer.
